It’s now the official “bossing” of Spider-Man films in the Philippines.
After 20 days in cinemas, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has broken more box office records in the country.
According to Columbia Pictures Philippines, the second film of the rebooted Spider-Man franchise has dislodged 2007′s “Spider-Man 3” as the biggest-grossing Spider-Man film in local history. With a nationwide gross of P438.91-million, “The Amazing 2” has outpaced “Spider-Man 3′s” final gross of P434.9-M and is expected to further widen the gap as it continues to play in selected screens.
It now also holds the record for the highest grossing title ever released by Columbia Pictures in the Philippines, as well as the country’s third biggest movie all-industry (local or foreign) and all-time, behind only two other Marvel titles, “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3.”
That includes the highest grossing local films of all time namely “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy”, “Starting Over Again” and yes, “My Little Bossings”—the film that producer and star Kris Aquino told Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield had beaten “The Amazing Spider-Man” in terms of “highest first-day gross”.
Breaking down the box office performance of “The Amazing 2”, SM Mall of Asia contributed the largest chunk of box office receipts with P23.21-M in 20 days, followed by SM North EDSA (P20.89-M), SM Megamall (P19.53-M), Trinoma (P16.77-M) and SM Cebu (P11.85-M).
The newly opened Bonifacio High Street cinemas which showed the film in the revolutionary 4D format posted an outstanding gross of P10.60-M.
Also delivering impressive totals were Glorietta 4 (P10.22-M), Alabang Town Center (P8.36-M), SM Southmall (P7.93-M), Greenbelt 3 (P7.76-M), SM Aura (P7.32-M), SM Clark (P6.99-M), Eastwood (P6.98-M), SM Fairview (P6.90-M) and Greenhills (P6.74-M).
Market! Market! led the top 16 to 30 rankings with P6.42-M, followed by Gateway (P6.23-M), Ayala Cebu (P6.07-M), Newport City (P5.67-M), SM Dasmarinas (P5.59-M), Robinsons Magnolia (P5.51-M), Power Plant (P5.50-M), Robinsons Ermita (P5.38-M), Festival Mall (P5.36-M), SM San Lazaro (P5.29-M), SM Marikina (P5.16-M), SM Baguio (P4.98-M), SM Bacoor (P4.94-M), Sta. Lucia East (P4.88-M) and Shang Cineplex (P4.83-M).
The film also performed exceedingly well in the U.S. and other parts of the world. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned a worldwide total gross of $634,691,717 with $173,691,717.
Despite mixed reviews, the film’s performance is also an indication of the acceptance of Garfield as the new Spider-Man. The 30-year-old American-British actor took over the role from Tobey Maguire after Columbia and Marvel Entertainment decided to reboot the superhero franchise following the successful trilogy helmed by director Sam Raimi.
